A caliber is the measure of diameter of the barrel of a weapon. The measurement of the barrel, also signifies the measure of the size of ammunition used in that weapon. The measure of diameter of the barrel of a weapon, depends on the type of weapon. In some cases, the barrel of the weapon changes size at different points on the weapon. However, the measurement usually takes place at the end of the barrel.
 
 
The caliber of any given weapon, generally dictates the type of ammunition used in that weapon. Although bullets may differ in materials and shape, the ammunition should match the caliber of the weapon.
 
 
In some cases, the caliber of ammunition may be different than the diameter of  the weapon. However, using different caliber ammunition than what is specified, may not as effective as using the correct caliber. In fact, using different calibers can be dangerous the individual using the weapon, as the ammunition can become jammed and the gun make backfire.
 
 
Within calibers, there may be a variety of types of ammunition that will work with that weapon. For example, some guns may use hollow point bullets, which are especially deadly as they cause the most damage to the body. A weapon that can utilize hollow point bullets, will also be able to utilize other types of ammunition, as long as they are the correct caliber.
 
 
Calibers are used to describe the size of the barrel of a weapon and the ammunition used in that weapon.
