Firearms Act Explained

The Firearms Act implemented an excise tax on certain weapons when they were manufactured or the ownership was transferred. The act also included a national gun registry in which the serial number and name of the owner for certain types of firearms, must be registered with the government.

Class 3 weapons
Class 3 weapons include specific types of firearms, such as short barreled rifles or shotguns. Those that are approved for ownership of a handgun, will likely be approved for class 3 weapon ownership. However, the process can be lengthy and includes a transfer fee, or excise tax, which can be cost prohibitive for some individuals.
