Attempts to institute new gun reforms are usually opposed, with the NRA instead advocating the enforcement of existing laws passed as gun reforms. One legislative victory that the NRA had in its battle against gun reforms was when it convinced the Congress to allow the Federal Assault Weapons Ban of 1994 to lapse in 2004.
