Michigan gun laws adhere to all federal guidelines. There are however different state laws which differ from Michigan gun laws. For example in Michigan, individuals may purchase a shotgun or rifle without a waiting period and without a permit. In fact, residents of Michigan do not need a license or a permit to carry a rifle or a shotgun.
 
 
Handguns however, have different specifications for ownership in Michigan. Michigan gun laws specify that individuals require a permit to carry a handgun, whether or not the weapon is concealed, as long as it is a vehicle.
 
 
In Michigan, it is also a requirement that individuals have a permit to purchase a gun, as well as registering that gun once it is purchased. The handgun must be registered according to the serial number found on the gun.
